Peters Mine Documents

The Peters Mine operated under private ownership from the mid-1700s until the early 1890s when mining operation ceased as a result of competition from Midwestern mines, according to historical documents. Peters Mine was again worked to a limited extent during the early 1900s and closed again around 1931. The U.S. Government, through the Defense Plant Corporation, bought the mines in the early 1940s with the intention of restarting them to support the World War II effort, although the Peters Mine was never returned to production.

Pittsburgh Pacific Company of Minnesota bought the mine and some adjoining land from the U.S. government at an auction on July 15, 1958. It is believed that the Pittsburgh Pacific Company did not engage in mining activity in Ringwood. Ringwood Realty Corp., a former Ford Motor Company subsidiary, purchased the mine property and adjoining land on Jan. 7, 1965.

In November 1970, Ringwood Realty donated approximately 290 acres, comprising most of the remaining land between Margaret King Highway and Peters Mine, to the Borough of Ringwood's Solid Waste Management Authority (RSWMA). RSWMA operated a municipal landfill on a portion of this property form 1972 until it was ordered closed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) in 1976.

In December 1973, 35 acres southwest of Peters Mine between Peters Mine Road and the PSE&G right of way were conveyed to The Housing Operation With Training Opportunity (HOWTO), a New Jersey not-for-profit.
